STEPS TO TAKE IF YOU SUSPECT A SCAM

I think someone is scamming me

If a request seems suspicious, stop and verify it before taking further action. If you have already shared information or sent money, the following steps can help you respond.

  1. End the contact. Hang up or stop replying. Do not follow links, open attachments, send money, or share verification codes. Do not give the person remote access—the ability to view or control your device from elsewhere.
  2. Verify the request independently. Use a number from your bank card, an official statement, or your Medicare card. For a family emergency, call a number you already have for that person. Do not rely on contact details supplied in the suspicious message or call.
  3. If you sent money or shared account details, contact your bank promptly. Use its official number and explain what happened. Ask about protecting the account and whether a payment can be stopped or disputed.
  4. Protect your accounts. If you shared a password, change it through the real app or website, along with any other account using that password. Enable an additional sign-in check if available, such as a code or approval prompt. If you allowed remote access to your device, disconnect it from the internet and seek assistance from a trusted technical support provider.
  5. Preserve records and report the incident. Keep relevant messages, caller details, and payment receipts without opening suspicious links or attachments. Use the official reporting resources below. A trusted person can help you document and report what happened.

Be cautious of unsolicited offers to recover lost money. A request for an upfront recovery fee may be another scam.
